Captain Derek Gantz Henson, United States Army, age 35, of 248 Coleridge Lane, Coatesville, PA, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2013, at Crozer- Chester Medical Center, Chester, PA.

Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of Robert L. Henson, husband of Dana S. Branche Henson of Lancaster and the late Gail Marie Gantz Henson, who died in 1997. Derek and his wife Talia Marie Toaltoan Henson , celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary on June 14, 2013.

Derek was a Captain in the United States Army from June 2002 to the present having served three deployments to Kuwait and Afghanistan. He currently served as an R.O.T.C. instructor at Drexel University.

He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Engineering from Thomas Edison State College in New Jersey.

Derek's memberships included Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Lancaster Elks, Conestoga Lodge #140 and American Legion Post #34.

Surviving in addition to his wife, father and stepmother are a son Derek Henson, Jr., and daughter Amari Henson, of Coatesville; three brothers: Robert Myers, husband of Keisha; Clarence B. Henson, and Kevin Myers; two sisters: April Myers and Erin Henson Jones, wife of John; and one step sister, Briana Branche, all of Lancaster.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Derek's Life Celebration Funeral Service at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 450-512 E. Strawberry St., Churchtown, of Lancaster, PA, on Friday December 6, 2013 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Edward Maurice Bailey officiating. Interment will be in Mellinger's Mennonite Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM and on Friday at the church from 9:00 AM until time of service.
