Hassell was born on February 13, 1916 in Indian Valley, Virginia to Bert and Nancy Cox. He married Wilma Shumaker on July 25, 1936 in Kahoka, Missouri.
Hassell is survived by his three children, Richard S. (Gloria) Cox of Arlington, Texas; J. M. "Toby" (Virgi) Cox of Galesburg, Illinois and Connie "Missie" Nelson of Abingdon, Illinois; eight grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and two great, great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, four sisters and one infant.
Hassell was educated and graduated from Avon High School and while attending Brown's Business College in Galesburg, worked at Coney Island, Galesburg. Hassell served in the United States Navy during WWII. He worked for the American Sanitary (Brass Factory) in Abingdon, and eventually retired from the City of Abingdon's cemetery maintenance department. He enjoyed mowing yards, playing horseshoes and bowling.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 11A.M. at the Hermon Cemetery, Hermon, Illinois. Rev. Joel Olsen will officiate. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be made through www.hurd-hendricksfuneralhome.com
