Jesse was unmarried and worked on the family ranches with his brothers and father. His middle name, Moroni, is in tribute to the Nephite warrior prophet in the historical scriptures of the Book of Mormon.

His family dry farmed at their Morgan Valley ranch and then moved cattle to the Kaysville and Cottonwood Canyons area in the summers. Their home was in the Kay's Creek region, which is now Kaysville and Layton, Davis County, Utah.

He was the fifth son and sixth child of John O'Brien and Rebecca Angelina King.
