Dr. Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Quattromani

LUBBOCK - Mother of four and grandmother of eleven. Beloved wife, daughter, and sister. Educator, patriot, Army wife, philanthropist, adopted west Texan, FIFA-certified soccer coach, and darn good golfer.

Libby was born on Fort Bragg Army base, N.C., on Jan. 21, 1947, to Lt. Col. James Carl Henderson of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions, and Army Nurse Captain Margaret Kokayko, both of whom were veterans of the Battle of the Bulge in WWII.

A graduate of the University of Colorado and the University of San Francisco, Libby was Outstanding Teacher of the Year for the Aurora, Colorado Public Schools in 1974. She held a doctorate in Organizational Leadership and Curriculum and published various articles, including three chapters in the Encyclopedia of Mathematics Education.

She held positions as professor of education at the University of Colorado and Western New Mexico University. At WNMU, she obtained grant money to establish the Graduate Studies Center in Gallup, N.M., that focused on educating Navajo women-work for which she was honored as a hero by the Navajo nation.

Libby was also an original founding partner (Plank Owner) in the Naval Special Warfare (Navy SEAL) Endowment Society. Libby was a member of the Lubbock Symphony Board of Directors, the UMC Foundation Board, and enjoyed the First Baptist Church of Lubbock Sunday School.

Libby was a woman of accomplishment who was so much more than her achievements. To know her was to be awed by her energy, kindness, and fierce passion for living. Libby never met a stranger. To the occasional chagrin of her loving sons, she gushed without reservation about her boys. She turned every cross-country or international Army move into an adventure of fun and learning. Though no one word can sum up this amazing woman, the closest possible is this: spirit. She is gone too soon but leaves behind a legacy of love that not even west Texas could contain.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; her sons, Scott, Jeff, Max, and Jimmy, her mother, brother, sister, grandchildren, and countless friends and loved ones.
