Paige Johnson was lovingly reared by the late Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Johnson Jr. and Mrs. Eva. H. Johnson of Salisbury, N.C.
Paige became a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, at an early age, in Salisbury, N.C., where his father was the pastor. He later became an active and dedicated member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va., where he served on the Deacon Board, Trustee Board, Superintendent of Sunday School, and Board of Directors Chairperson of Tabernacle Baptist Church Daycare and Learning Center.
Paige Johnson received his secondary education from J.C. Price High School in Salisbury, N.C., (1954); his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Education from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., (1959); attended North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., and obtained a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Supervision from Virginia State University in Petersburg (1976).
Upon graduating from Shaw University, he accepted the position of the Assistant Dean of Men and later transitioned to Virginia State University to serve as the Resident Director/Counselor, Assistant and Director of Financial Aid. In 1978, he accepted a position at John Tyler Community College in Chester, Va., as the Coordinator of Financial Aid/Affirmative Action of Equal Employment Opportunity where he retired from his successful career in 1991.
Paige's professional and civic affiliations included: VASFAA (Chairperson), Die Progressive Herren Civic Club (President), Petersburg Chamber of Commerce (Board of Directors), Petersburg Pan Hellenic Council, YMCA of Chester (Board of Management), General Assembly Nursing Scholarship Committee (Chairperson), Advisory Board of State Education Assistance Authority, Beaux-Twenty Social Club, Inc. (President), Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (initiated in 1956 and Charter Member of Nu Omicron Lambda), Eureka Lodge #15, F&M, Fort Lee Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Committee, Richmond Association of Black College and University Alumni, Shaw University National Alumni Association (President and Chaplain), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (Life Member and Chesterfield County Branch President), Petersburg Kiwanis, Club Dejouir and Diques (Charter Member), Martha Mason Hill Memorial Foundation, Chesterfield Dialogue Committee, Thursday Night Club, Club 36 (President) and an avid Golfer.
A funeral service for Paige Poindexter Johnson Sr. was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA.
