Irene Gera Kavulich, 84, of Taylor, died Sunday morning shortly after admittance to the VNA Hospice at Geisinger Community Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Her husband, Michael A. "Beefy" Kavulich, died July 21, 1988. Born on August 18, 1929, she was the last daughter of the late John and Helen Zatkovitch Gera. Irene worked most of her life in the garment industry, where she was known to be an expert zipper setter. She later worked at Allied Services, from where she retired in order to use the free time to babysit her grandchildren. She was a parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish and a lifelong member of the former St. John the Baptist Church, Taylor. Irene loved the outdoors, and was a fanatic when it came to using her green thumb to produce a lush, green lawn in the summer. In the winter, she loved nothing better than using her snowthrower, even for a dusting of snow. She enjoyed her 5:30 a.m. weekend trips to Mohegan Sun (especially when she came away a winner), using her garage as a summer room, solving the jumble in each day's newspaper and playing her Nintendo Game Boy. Most of all, she was proud of and loved her family, especially great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda; a brother, John; and five sisters, Anna Shimo, Susan Hvasta, Mary Mraz, Helen Katchmar and Margaret David. The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 in Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton. Interment will follow in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call Wednesday, 4-8 p.m.
