Neil Bass was a gentleman who enjoyed "living the good life." Suave and debonair describe him well. Always immaculately groomed and appropriately attired, his well-modulated voice and gregariousness made him a great companion. Hosting family gatherings was his forte. Neil's New Year's Eve parties were a much-anticipated event because he was an ideal host who did all in his power to make his guests comfortable and welcome. His generosity, compassion and kindness endeared him to many.

Hugh Neil Bass, only child of Aubrey Handsel Bass and Marjorie May Watson, was born in Dallas, Texas on December 25, 1927. Known as Neil, he spent his early life in Stewards Mill and graduated from Fairfield High School. From 1945 to 1949, he served in the US Air Force. A teacher by profession, Neil received both his B.S. degrees and his M.Ed. degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University. He taught for 26 years, mostly in Fairfield, and was most known for his drama and American history classes. In addition to teaching, Neil was a member of the Freestone County Historical Commission and a charter member of Fairfield Lions Club. A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, he served as chairman of the board at First United Methodist Church, Fairfield. The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce recognized him as Citizen of the Year in 2007. Neil and his wife Barbara funded the Bass Building at the Freestone County Museum. In 1952, Neil and Barbara Dell Nicholas were married at First Methodist Church in Fairfield. He had noticed her singing in the choir and was immediately smitten. They were parents of Donna Elaine and Dave Neil.
