1951 PULITZER PRIZE WINNER--HISTORY

I.U. PROFESSOR IS GIVEN PULITZER PRIZE
Bloomington, Ind., May 8--(AP)--Twenty years of research paid off in a Pulitzer Prize yesterday for Dr. R. Carlyle Buley.

Dr. Buley, professor of history at Indiana University, won the Pulitzer history award for his book, "The Old Northwest, Pioneer Period, 1915-1860." He said last night that winning a Pulitzer award gives one a "nice feeling."

He said nine-tenths of the material for his two-volume study came from newspapers of the period.

He found part of his source material in the I.U. library but traveled considerably to get the rest. He read newspapers published in the early 19th century in Indianapolis, Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, Springfield, Ill., and Madison, Wis.

Dr. Buley has been on the I.U. faculty since 1925, when he completed work for the doctor of philosophy degree at the University of Wisconsin. He previously received the B.A. and M.A. degrees from Indiana. He is a native of Georgetown, Ind., and is 57 years old.
