Gideon is the son of Stephen Jenks (1759-1819) and Ann Sayles (1761-aft1830). He married Sarah Shaw about 1810. The family moved to Laurel in 1815. They had at least seven children.

In New England, the family name was spelled Jenks or sometimes Jenkes, but Gideon and his brother Samuel usually used Jinks. On their mother's side the brothers are descended from Roger Williams(1603-1683), the founder of Rhode Island, through his oldest daughter Mary. On their father's side they are descended from Joseph Jenks (1599-1683), iron maker, holder of the first patent issued in the Colonies, and inventor of the scythe.
