Married April 7, 1846 in Frederick County, Maryland and had nine children.
- First teacher in the new school house built in 1840 near Davis Mill,
- First teacher to teach a 'colored' school in Frederick County in 1864,
whereby his life was not safe on the streets in Frederick
- After teaching for 26 years, he bought a farm in the Ballenger Creek area and
manufactured the first molasses in Maryland from Chinese sugar cane.
- He was the first man to sell sweet potato plants on the Frederick market.
- He was also known for the sweetest sweet corn and delicious peaches as
well as other fruits and vegetables.
- He ran for Congress in 1866 and was a staunch Thomas Paine supporter.
