Death Claims John Browne


John Lucius Browne, 72, a retired lawyer and resident of San Antonio for 30 years, died Saturday at his home, 3001 Main avenue.

Born September 11, 1866, and a graduate of Southwestern university, Browne served at Goliad as county judge and also served in the state legislature from 1904 to 1908.

He practiced law for many years in Goliad and Karnes counties and organized and was president of the Karnes County National bank before moving to San Antonio in 1909. He retired from his law practice about 20 years ago.

In San Antonio, he took an active part in civic affairs, being one of the organizers of the Taxpayers league. He served on the Carnegie Library board.

Browne was a Knight Templar, a thirty-second degree Mason and first grand master of the San Antonio lodge No. 1079 and a member of the Laurel Heights Methodist church. He married Miss Fannie Meriwether in 1892.

Surviving are a brother, Harold Browne, and two sisters, Mrs. A. J. Bell and Mrs. Josephine Browne Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the family residence with interment in Mission burial park.

Note: Mother was Ella Killgore, who married Lucius Henry Browne 11 Oct 1865 in Bexar, TX, and died about 1869. Burial place not known.
