PONCA, Neb. -- Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Nelson, 71, of Ponca died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Elms Health Care Center in Ponca.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Ponca, with the Rev. Nancy Tomlinson officiating. Burial will be in Ponca City Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today, with family present at 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nelson was born March 28, 1930, the daughter of Alfred and Clara (Cook) Smith. She graduated from Ponca High School in 1947. In 1949 she married Lowell Guy of Newcastle, Neb., where they farmed. Three daughters were born to this union. They moved to Ponca in 1969. She was employed for 20 years at the ASCS office in Ponca, and retired in 1990. Mr. Guy died in November 1981. She later married Carleton Nelson of Hartington, Neb., on May 7, 1988. They made their home in Ponca.

She was active in her church. She served as treasurer for 25 years, was an elder, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, and presently secretary of the Presbyterian women's organization. She was an officer in the Order of the Eastern Star 168 of Ponca, member of the Helping Hand Club and was past vice president of the Ponca Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed her family, friends, bus tours, crocheting, quilt making and cooking.

Survivors include her husband, three daughters, a stepdaughter and her husband, seven grandchildren, a great-grandson, four sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, a half sister and her husband, and a half brother and his wife.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Larry Schindler; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Guy; and five brothers-in-law, Darrell, Lyle and Larry Guy, Roy Nelson and Norman Hangman.
