Robert L. (Bob) Poss, 83, of Toccoa, formerly of Tifton, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Heritage Health Care in Toccoa. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors with Dr. G Martin and the Rev. S Rogers officiating. A private service will follow at Tift Memorial Gardens.
Bob was born June 22, 1924, in Athens to the late James and Helen Graham Poss. A brother, George Wesley (Jack) Poss, also preceded him in death. Bob graduated from Athens High School in 1941 and attended the University of Georgia. During World War II, he served in the USAF in England as a 2nd Lieutenant navigator of a B-17 bomber with the 401 Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. Bob received his B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Georgia in 1948 and was employed for seven years by the Lilliston Implement Company in Albany. In 1955, Russell Daniel Irrigation Company, Athens, purchased a farm equipment and irrigation company in Tifton and asked Bob to manage it. He was well known throughout the Southeast for his irrigation expertise and provided service installation of equipment to farmers, research scientists, architects, and other users of irrigation equipment such as municipalities and golf course operators. His installations include many golf courses, high school and college athletic fields, and he ventured to Africa to install two irrigation systems for the much-needed food production in that area of the world. Bob was active in the First United Methodist Church of Tifton where he served as Secretary and Chairman of the Board, Education Committee Chairman, a member of the nominating committee, and was active in the Sunday school department. He was well known for his support of youth groups, especially the Tift County High School Booster Club He also was a member of the Irrigation Association (formerly the Sprinkler Irrigation Association) since 1948, a member of the Georgia IA and the Florida IA, and a member of the Georgia Farm Equipment Association since 1955, which is now the Southern Farm and Power Equipment Association.
