MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. >> Virginia Veronika Kovalcin Andrus Paul, 102, was called home to the Lord, Nov. 20, 2013 in Merritt Island, Fla.
Virginia is survived by her son-in-law Thomas Graves; grandchildren Gregory (Susan), Robin and John Graves; and great-grandchildren Dallas and Megan Graves, all residing in Florida. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Richard Andrus and Robert Paul and her daughter Sheila Andrus Graves.
She was born Dec. 29, 1910, to John and Zuzanna Kovalcin in Joliet, Ill., their second (surviving) child and eldest daughter. She and her family moved to a farm in Doniphan, Mo. when she was 6. Virginia moved to Detroit at age 18 and worked as a waitress, sending money home to her family. In her later years, Virginia often admonished her family when they ate out to leave the waitresses a good tip because they work hard to earn a living.
In Detroit, she met and married Richard R. Andrus of Schenectady, N.Y. in 1932. Virginia and Richard's only child, Sheila, was born in 1941. After the war the young family moved to Syracuse, N.Y. with Richard's job at GE. Richard passed away unexpectedly in 1951, leaving the young widow and their daughter alone.
In 1956, Virginia met and married Robert L. Paul of Oneida, N.Y. She and Rob lived happily in the home he built for her on Fairview Avenue until his death in 1972. Virginia remained in their home, tending to her beautiful gardens, growing fruit and vegetables, taking care of her beloved dogs Tina and Sugar, and being "Aunt" to all the neighborhood children.
In 2004, Virginia moved to Merritt Island, Fla. to be nearer to her daughter, Sheila, and her family as her health started to fail. She will be remembered for her always open back door, fresh baked cookies and cakes, tulips in the spring, stubbornness forged by growing up in the Depression, and most especially, her raspberry preserves.
A Funeral Mass was held on Nov. 27, at 12 p.m. at Divine Mercy Catholic Church on Merritt Island. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, Oneida, N.Y., in the spring of 2014. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Paul Funeral Home, Madison.
