Merchant and philanthropist. Born the second son of Henry Dove. Over the course of his marriage, he had five sons, and they lived in the parish of St. Clement Eastcheap. He served his apprenticeship in London finishing it in 1550. He was called to the livery in 1562, and rose through the ranks to become Master of the Merchant Taylors in 1578. He also was a member of the City Common Council from 1565 to 1593. He traded with both Russia, Spain and Flanders and was a member of the Russia Company between 1555 and 1590. By 1577, he also was a collector of a subsidy on exports. He outlived his wife and the Merchant Taylors' Company erected the monument to him on this death. He shared his financial success with many charities. He provided funds to the parish church of St. Sepulchre, various prisons and nineteen poor households. In his estate, he allowed twenty pounds yearly to be distributed to the poor and aged.
