Art was the only child of Alfred Erikson and Lillian Albrecht. When he was a child his dad was a telephone lineman and they lived in a small trailer, following the work. He never went to school for an entire year in the same school until high school. He was a graduate of Technical High School in Omaha, graduating in 1951.

After high school Art enlisted in the US Army and spent almost the entire time in France and Germany. While in the military he played football. In 1954 he was honorably discharged from the army and upon his return home he attempted to re-enlist into the Marine Corps with several of his high school friends. Since he had rheumatic fever as a child and had a heart murmur, he was unable to enlist in the Marines. He often said the doctor that turned him down at enlistment saved his life, since his friends who he had tried to enlist with her all killed in action in Korea.

In September 1956, Art married Sandra Lee Vosseler, and in December 1956 he joined the Omaha Police Department.

Art and Sandee had 4 children, Melinda (Mindi), born in 1957; Melissa (Missy), in 1961; Marc, in 1963; and Melanie in 1966. Art retired from the Omaha Police Department in May 1985 after serving for 29 years. During his career he worked in the Traffic Unit doing accident investigation and selective enforcement, and on the street as a patrol officer. At the time of his retirement, he was working one of two interstate patrol cars and continuously patrolled the interstate for his entire shift. He also worked many part time jobs and enjoyed meeting new people. Art never met a person he didn't like and had many friends.

Sandee and Art divorced in 1987, and Art later remarried and divorced.

In 2009 Art was diagnosed with dementia after a car accident and in 2010 he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, to live in the Veterans Home there. He enjoyed the time he spent there and made many friends. In 2012, Art suffered a stroke and eventually was transferred to the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue, Nebraska, to be closer to family. Although his dementia continued to worsen, he continued to make friends and enjoyed socializing with the other residents and staff.

On November 21, 2013, Art was found unresponsive at the nursing home and was taken to the hospital. His family was blessed to have two wonderful days to let him know how much he was loved and would be missed before he became unresponsive again and he ultimately passed away on November 25, 2013, at 81 years and 10 days of age.

Art is survived by his children, Mindi (Steve) Kurtz, Missy (Ray) Petru, Marc Scott, and Melanie Reida. He had 7 grandchildren, Meghan (Jason) Witty, Matthew (Magann) Klotz, Amber (Jason) Peleska, Aaron (Emily) Luneke, Anthony (Candace)Luneke, Vivianna Reida and Sarah Reida. He is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Ryan Luneke, Vincent Peleska, and Hailey Klotz.

He was laid to rest near his parents at Westlawn Hillcrest Memorial Park on Friday, 29 November 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

Dad was loved and will be missed by many. Rest in Peace, dad - we love you and will see you as soon as God will let us!
