Joann made a valuable contribution to the war effort during WWII at the Naval Ammunition Depot outside Hastings, placing gunpowder in shells alongside other local women. Following the war, she married the late Patrick Henry Draney.
Joann worked as a secretary for Greyhound, Chevrolet, Penn Valley Community College, and Marion Laboratories before getting her teaching certificate and began teaching English literature at Raytown High School, where she created the Mythology curriculum and inspired students for many years. She especially loved the works of Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Robert Frost, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau. She attended Colonial Presbyterian Church and enjoyed many joyful friendships through its programs, taking trips far and wide. This travel group enjoyed river rafting, canoeing, and hiking.
