Bob was born in Austinville, Iowa, on Jan. 8, 1938, to Gertrude (Harken) and Louis Ontjes. On June 2, 1961, he married Lorna Groothuis in the Aplington First Reformed Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lorna; son Scott and his special friend, Marcia McClure; son, Fred (wife Ann), and granddaughter, Lindsey; mother, Gertrude Ontjes; sisters, Nancy (Gary) Smith and Mary Dohlman; and brother-in-law, Larrie Groothuis; plus numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Bob looked for opportunities to serve his Lord in a quiet manner mainly as an example and mentor. He served as a wonderful son, husband, father and grandfather. He was a high school teacher in Iowa and administrator at NW Missouri State College and The University of Iowa, with BS, MS and Ph.D degrees from various universities. Bob served as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America for many years as well as a deacon and elder in several churches. Working with his computer and traveling in his motor home were his main interests after retirement.
