Robert Louis Ontjes, 75, of Iowa City passed away on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at New Life Community Church, 106 Second Ave., Coralville, with a visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. at Hitesville Cemetery in rural Aplington, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Life Community Church Building Fund.
Bob was born in Austinville, Iowa, on Jan. 8, 1938, to Gertrude (Harken) and Louis Ontjes. On June 2, 1961, he married Lorna Groothuis in the Aplington First Reformed Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lorna; son Scott and his special friend, Marcia McClure; son, Fred (wife Ann), and granddaughter, Lindsey; mother, Gertrude Ontjes; sisters, Nancy (Gary) Smith and Mary Dohlman; and brother-in-law, Larrie Groothuis; plus numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Bob looked for opportunities to serve his Lord in a quiet manner mainly as an example and mentor. He served as a wonderful son, husband, father and grandfather. He was a high school teacher in Iowa and administrator at NW Missouri State College and The University of Iowa, with BS, MS and Ph.D degrees from various universities. Bob served as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America for many years as well as a deacon and elder in several churches. Working with his computer and traveling in his motor home were his main interests after retirement.
