John was a member of Company F, 17th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers during the Civil War. He mustered in April 12, 1864, was wounded on June 17th the same year at Petersburg. He mustered out July 14, 1865.
Death announcements were published in several Vermont newspapers, including
The Brattleboro Reformer (Brattleboro, Vermont). On March 21, 1923, the Reformer stated John died in South Londonderry, Vermont; on April 4, 1923. the Reporter stated John Howard had lived in Peru, Vermont, but he died at the home of his daughter, Mary (Mrs. John Capen), in Winhall, Vermont.
