Afterwards, he joined the District of Columbia National Guard, and decided on a military career instead of becoming a lawyer. He fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and later in China during the Boxer Rebellion, where he received a medal for bravery. He resigned from the Marines in 1907 due to ill health.
