Troy was the fifth of five sons born to Myrtle Pointer and Arthur Leroy "Art" Johnston. His older brothers, in order, were:
Lee Roy Johnston,
Robert Henry "Bob" Johnston,
William "Pete" Johnston, and
Jerry Johnston.

His grandfather was George Washington Johnston of Casa Grande, AZ.

George Washington Johnston was born December 18, 1871 near Stafford, Monroe County, Ohio - d. 10 Jul 1935, Casa Grande, Pinal County, Arizona. He was the eighth of ten children born to Solomon Johnston & Sarah Johnson. Solomon was the son of Peter and Esther Johnston. Sarah was the daughter of William Johnson & Margaret Hickman. On Dec 3, 1893, Monroe, OH, George W. Johnston married Nevada Olive Day, age 17 (4 Mar 1875 - 6 Nov 1918, daughter of John A. Day & Anna Elma McVey).
Nevada died in the influenza epidemic of 1918.

Troy was first married to Melanie Elizabeth Johnston (born December 1949); Melanie Johnston was a devout follower of a strict religious denomination. In February 1972, they had one daughter together, Joan Elizabeth "Joanie" Johnston, of 15060 Chaparral Loop, Peyton, CO, who was estranged from Troy after Melanie divorced him. It is unknown whether she even knows her father has died.

Troy was a devout believer in his Lord Jesus Christ. He and his second wife, Jacquelyn Leopold Johnston (Gregory D.) Garlieb, hosted Bible Studies in their home in Scottsdale, AZ, and they were active in their local church. He also survives Jacque's son, Steven James Leopold, and her daughter, Patrina Elizabeth (Leopold) Painter of Austin, TX.

Troy struggled with the ravages of Multiple Sclerosis for years until he could no longer dress himself; so after three days of this dependency and burden upon his wife, who had nursed her previous husband, James L. Leopold, through a long illness before she was widowed, he decided to take his own life.

Troy served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany.

He tried a career as a school teacher in Baghdad, AZ, but hated it, so he went to work for ADOT (Arizona Department of Transportation), and made a good living with them until his retirement.

When Troy was about seven years old, he traveled to Germany from Fredonia, AZ, with his mother and four brothers, to visit his father while Art was serving there in the Army. His oldest brother, Lee Roy, decided to stay behind in Germany with his dad, and his parents decided to divorce. On July 20, 1948, Troy (7), his mother (42), and three older brothers, Bob (17), Pete (14), and Jerry (11) departed Bremerhaven, Germany and arrived at New York, NY, aboard the USAT General Daniel I. Sultan vessel (renamed in 1946) on July 29, 1948. When Troy served our country in the US Army years later (10 Sep 1963 - 29 Aug 1966), he was also stationed in Germany. His Fredonia HS classmates visited him there: Linda Frazier '61 & Billy McMillan '61.

"We had dances at the tennis court on the west side of the old school. Sometimes Mike and I would go borrow a record player from someone and set it up and start the records playing and soon a lot of people would be there and dance. When it was over hours later, we'd take the phonograph and records home. Seems like we borrowed it from Lillian Parker at least one time. Then I remember one Valentines evening (much earlier), Odessa Burch and I both had a crush on Troy and took him a valentine, knocked on the door and ran. This was at the old Judd house. about 1958."

"I would have given anything to have found that Valentine so I could have teased Troy unmercifully about it. I was able to visit with Lillian Parker when I was in Fredonia last May. We were at the Parker house quite a bit that 1957-1958 school year visiting Lillian and Suzy. Their oldest sister, Lael, was married to Troy's older brother, our Uncle Pete Johnston. I never saw anyone dancing at the tennis court (what a great idea!)"

"I think I was one of the last DJ's to DJ there at the tennis courts before the school was closed.. I remember the cops being called out to tell us to turn it down. I think it was Konda Button (who, as Bud Button's widow, married Troy's brother, Bob Johnston) who called them. Which I was honest in saying that we had it cranked up pretty good. Good times." Lots of memories.."
