Professional Football Player. For eight seasons (1948 to 1952 and 1954 to 1956), he played at the defensive back and halfback positions in the All-America Football Conference and National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams. Born James Allnutt Cason, Jr., he was raised in Texas where he attended Patti Welder High School in Victoria. While there, he excelled in basketball and track as well as football. His athletic attributes earned him enrollment at Louisiana State University and while there, he contributed to the Tigers' 1946 football squad who reached the Cotton Bowl. Individually, he set a school record when he scored 3 touchdowns in a span of five minutes during a game against Rice University. Selected by the Chicago Cardinals during the 7th round of the 1948 NFL Draft, he ended up with San Francisco of the AAFC and led the league with 9 interceptions during 1949. The 49ers survived the league's folding and joined the NFL in 1950. Cason went on to play in 89 regular season AAFC and NFL games, while earning Pro-Bowl honors twice (1951 and 1954). After retiring from football, he served for twenty years as a sports director and television personality at a TV station in Harlingen, Texas.
