GySgt. Werts, 77, of Oceanside, CA, formerly of Charlotte, was called to duty in heaven on February 5, 2008 to serve his eternity after completing his TDY on earth.
He will join his wife, Betty Jean; his father and mother, George Henry and Farie Talent Werts; his two sons, Mark and Timothy Riely; and daughter, Marge 'Peggy' Riley Gillum; his sister, Eloise Robinette of Charlotte, NC, all whom preceded him in death.
George is survived by his brothers, Hugh Sanford Werts and William Werts, both of Charlotte; sisters, Farie Lucretia 'Lucy' Haigler of Pawley's Island, SC and Nancy Bookout of Knoxville, TN; children, Candace Werts Kirkley of Mentone, CA, Faye Werts Verran of Oceanside, CA, George H. Werts, Jr. of York, NE and Roger E. Werts of Post Falls, ID.
George was a proud grandfather of 13 and great grandfather of 8. George served multiple tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam and held the United States Marine Corps as his family, and was proud to serve for 23 years, retiring from active duty in 1969. He later worked for the Marine Corps Exchange for 12 years. George will be greatly missed and our loss is heaven's gain.
A private ceremony was held by the family.
