1stLt White was the husband of Sheila White, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. White Jr., the dear brother of Frederick and Andrew White all of Dayton Ohio, and Mrs.Sara W. Arn (Dale), of Jefferson City MO. In Vietnam, 1stLt White was assigned to and was serving as a Platoon Commander with Company H, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On November 1 during Operation HENDERSON HILL Company H engaged an enemy platoon in fortified position in the Le Nam Village complex located in in Duy Xuyen District of Quang Nam Province. The enemy in bunkers fired accurate RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade), and automatic weapons fire against the advancing Marines. Fixed Wing air support was requested with the Marines pulling back and setting up a perimeter with the engagement lasting until dusk. During the battle six Marines were killed in action and several were wounded, 1stLt White was one of the casualties he was killed by hostile rifle fire.
