In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Thelma Keener, Maude Strickland, Edith Meadows and Jean Sutton; one brother, George Caldwell, Jr.; and a son-in-law, Garry Eavenson.
He served honorably in the US Army as a sergeant during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. Walter returned to Waynesville and worked at the Dayco Corporation, retiring as a supervisor after more than 40 years.
Walter is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margaret Reeves Caldwell; a daughter, Peggy Caldwell Eavenson of Asheville; two sisters, Laura Price and Edna Caldwell; three brothers, Charles, Kim, and Ronnie Dale Caldwell; two grandchildren, Teresa Eavenson and her husband, Paul, and Benton Eavenson and his wife Kellie.
