During the Civil War, William served as a Private in Company C, 3rd Regiment, Vermont Infantry from July 16, 1861 to July 27, 1864.

After mustering out, William moved to Peacham, Vermont, where he worked as a blacksmith. On December 12, 1867, William married Electa Hopkins in Peacham Vermont. They had two sons.
