Charles served as a Private in Company G, 4th Regiment, Vermont infantry during the Civil War. He mustered in April 12, 1862, and was reported missing on June 6, 1864. On June 23rd, he was reported as a prisoner of war at Weldon Railroad. Sent to Andersonville prison, he was paroled on February 28, 1865. He mustered out April 21 the same year.

Charles had a son named Daniel, born about 1870. Daniel's mother's name may have been Mary.

On September 15, 1875, Charles and Chloe were married in Danville, Vermont.
