BUCYRUS: James E. Ulmer, 98, of rural Bucyrus died Wednesday afternoon, November 27, 2013 at the Kingston Residence of Marion where he had resided the past three years.

He was born April 7, 1915 in Whetstone Twp. to the late Lester E. and Iva Victoria (Meck) Ulmer. Jim graduated from North Robinson High School in 1933. He began dating Marcenia Kepler at a Farm Bureau Youth League dance. They were married following her nurses training on March 17, 1940, sharing 61 years of marriage until her death April 22, 2001.

Jim will be remembered as a hard working farmer and a good listener. He had a passion for the care and well-being of livestock and he loved the work and companionship of his German Shepherds, all named King. Though he couldn't fix everything, he knew who to call to help and was grateful for the friendship and partnership of the "neighborhood" farmers. Jim was still farming this summer and featured in a newspaper story for the corn he grew in a planter on his balcony at the Kingston. He enjoyed visiting neighbors, popping corn and checking others' crops on Sunday drives, usually stopping for an ice cream cone along the way.

Jim served as a Whetstone Twp. Trustee for 28 years and served three terms on the North Robinson and Col. Crawford School Boards, overseeing the consolidation as board president. He was also on the Farm Bureau and served as a 4H and honorary FFA advisor. A man of strong faith, Jim was a member of the former Salem and Grace EUB and UMC churches. He attributed his good health to staying active and living by the motto, "If you don't use it, you'll lose it."

Jim is survived by two children, James Daniel (Linda) Ulmer of Marysville and Marcia K. (Jim) Weir of Marion; four grandchildren, Michele Ulmer, Kayla Ulmer, Laura Weir and Sarah (James) Homer; two great grandchildren, Ava and Anderson Homer; one sister, Dot DeMuth of Marysville along with a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Lytle and Jeannette Jones.

The Ulmer family will receive friends Monday, December 2 from 4-7 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, 249 E. Center St. in Marion with Rev. David L. Hoffman officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Union Cemetery, Sulphur Springs.

Memorial contributions may be given to Col. Crawford Schools Foundation, Bucyrus UMC, Epworth UMC-Marion, MGH Hospice or a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.
