Peggy Marie Richards, 83 year old Afton resident, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 25, 2013. Peggy was born on February 20, 1930 in Welch, OK to Johny and Stella (Green) Spunaugle. She was a graduate of Baxter Springs High School. On June 2, 1952 she was united in marriage to James Eugene Richards. Peggy loved the Lord and serving others. For 27 years she was a part of the Light of Leisure Shores Bible Group. She was also the Sunday school teacher of the JOY Sunday school class at Lake Center Baptist Church in Monkey Island where she was a member. She and her Leisure Shores Bible Study Group also raised money for the Moccasin Bend Ranch children’s home located on Spring River east of Miami. She was always there for anyone who needed her. Peggy also enjoyed doing arts and crafts; from crocheting, to rug making, to quilting, to making things for nursing home patients. She also enjoyed gardening and working in her flower beds.
Survivors include her loving husband James E. Richards of the home, children: Elizabeth Taylor of Afton, Sandra Pickett and husband Dan of Bartlesville, David Richards and wife Maureen of Grove, and Larry Richards and wife Kimberley of Potwin, KS, one sister: Delores Ayers of Bluejacket, 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister: Maxine Hurst, brother: J. W. Spunaugle, and grandson Greg Richards.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m., Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Lake Center Baptist Church in Monkey Island with Pastor Kim Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Afton.
