John George Penney Sr., 89, of Route 202 died Tuesday at a Dickson, Tenn., hospital after several months of declining health.

He was born in Alfred, a son of Weston and Bessey Trafton Penney, graduated from Alfred High School and worked as a weaver for several years in textile mills in Rhode Island.

In the early '30s Mr. Penney returned to Alfred and was a weaver at the former Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills. He also worked at Tennford Weaving and the former Seam Loc Carpet Mill. He retired to Lebanon 25 years ago.

Mr. Oenney was a member of Fraternal Masonic Lodge in Alfred.

He was an avid fisherman and had loved spending summers at his Lambert Lake camp for the past 31 years. He kept in shape by cutting and chopping firewood so his children could use the camp while ice fishing in the winter.

Mr. Penney was also an accomplished Civil War historian.

He was the 8-year companion of Louise Atkins of Dickson.

Surviving are three sons, John G. Jr. and Gilbert W., both of Topsfield, and Thomas A., with whom he made his home; a daughter, Louise Khiel of Topsfield; a brother, Walter of Ossipee, N.H.; two sisters, Flora and Florence Stanley both of Shapleigh; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Heald Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Springvale, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Jim McAtee will officiate. Spring burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Alfred.
