Nolan served as a Specialist Four Class, Company A, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Divison, U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He resided in Dover, Delaware prior to the war.

Nolan was wounded by Gun Fire in the Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam on February 14, 1968. He later "Died Of Those Wounds" at the USAF Hospital, Clark Air Base in the Philippines.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
