Daughter of David and Eliza Antonette (Bell) Woodruff

She always went by the name of Hortense.

She was a school teacher and taught for a period in Selma and for a time in Tuscaloosa probably at her mother's school for girls. She was very well read and an accomplished musician. She also served as the choir leader at the Presbyterian Church in Tuskaloosa.


Married Robert Emmett Rodes, Civil War General, on 10 September 1857 in Tuscaloosa.

The reason that she is not buried with him is due to the fact that the spot that should have been reserved for her was taken up by his brother, Virginius Rodes who served on his staff.
