Joseph was a Justice of the Peace in Townshend for 31 years. He also owned and operated a large farm which included a large sugar bush (maple syrup production) and orchards. After his death, the farm was sold at auction. The advertisement in the Vermont Phoenix, February 19, 1846, described the property as a "... pleasant and productive Farm, with an adjoining pasture, embracing in all 140 to 150 acres; situated in Townshend, one mile west of the East Village, on West River."
