Ray Stupek lived most of his life in the Portland (attending Lincoln High) and Lake Oswego areas, as well as the Santa Cruz and San Jose areas of California.

One of the youngest people to receive an Oregon auto dealer's license, he was a prominent player in the Oregon automobile industry in the 1950s and 1960s. Ray owned many used auto dealerships, including Auto Wholesale on Powell, Chrysler City on Union Avenue, Trailer City in Milwaukie and dealerships in Salem and Seattle.

In the early 1960s, he became one of the top Dodge/Chrysler dealers in the country, owning Dodge City on 82nd Avenue.

As a young man, he hauled gravel and logs and worked a variety of jobs during the war, including crane operator. Friends recall that after World War II, he purchased barrels of paint and a number of military vehicles from Ft. Lewis, and for months you could spot a Ray Stupek car on Oregon roadways by the bright maroon paint color.

He also raised Quarter Horses for racing (his favorite being Quickjack) and sold commercial real estate. He stayed connected to the auto industry throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Julian who died at birth and by his wife, Charlotte COULTAS Stupek, whom he met at age 17 while she worked as a waitress at the Grand Café on Grand Avenue in Portland.

He is survived by daughter, Phyllis; son, Sonny and daughter-in-law Bev; son, Daniel; son, Donald and daughter-in-law Cindy; daughter, Mary; son, Patrick; grandchildren, Megan Louise Curry, Adam Christopher, Michael Forest "Mike", Lauren Elizabeth, David Daniel, Brian Hudson and Tomoki Kinoshita Stupek; brother, Edward Henry; brother, Clarence Julius and his wife, Kitty; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

A celebration of his life was held Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at Salty's, 3839 NE Marine Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to Turtle Bay Exploration Park, 1335 Arboretum Drive Suite A, Redding, CA 96003.
