NEWPORT NEWS - Michael R. 'Mickey' McNamara, 77, died Friday, July 13, 2007, in his home. Born to the late James and Eva McNamara, he was a lifelong resident of Newport News. Mr. McNamara retired from the City of Newport News as Director of Public Works. He attended the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship and served on the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier while he was in the U.S. Navy. Mr. McNamara was very artistic and creative with his painting and woodworking. His children were privileged to have handmade doll furniture and in their adult life furniture for their own homes. His family also enjoyed his baking talents.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Robert, Richard and Russell McNamara. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie K. McNamara; two daughters, Kathy M. Liberta and her husband, John, and Joanne Martin Daly and her husband, John, all of Newport News; one sister, Janice M. Ellis and her husband, Robert, of Columbia, Md.; and five grandchildren, Justin, Bryant and Nicholas Liberta, Alexa Rae Martin and Jonathan Daly. He is also survived by numerous other family members and friends.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held noon Monday in Peninsula Memorial Park by the Rev. Dr. R. Furman Kenney. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
