William L. "Bill" Burge Sr. of Payson died July 16 in Phoenix. He was 72.

Mr. Burge was born May 8, 1922 in Cottage Grove, Oregon and had lived in Arizona for 36 years.

He served in World War II as a Gunners Mate on the U.S.S. Saratoga from 1942 to 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Far East Medal and various other medals. He and his wife ran an automotive garage and repair service in Wikieup from 1960 to 1963.

The couple was well known in the area as Mrs. Burge was raised in Wickenburg and Congress. He loved camping, fishing and hunting, especially with his sons. In his younger years, he enjoyed participating in rodeos. He was also an excellent cook and auto mechanic.

Mr. Burge is survived by his wife Dorothy of Payson; daughters Sandy Quesnoy of Banks, Oregon, Carol Reese of Jacksonville, Florida, Linda Sparkman of Phoenix and Donna Clark of Roswell, New Mexico; sons Bill Jr. of Phoenix, David of Casa Grande and Rick of Cornelius, Oregon; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and brother-in-law Paul Austin of Congress.

Services will be held Friday, July 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Frey Funeral Home with graveside committal services to follow at the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery. Pastor James Mecham will officiate.
