Robert is the son of Robert Lee Hargrove II & Mabelle Helen Reid. He married Cara Hazel Masvik on 27 Apr 1946 in Reno, Washoe, Nevada, USA. The couple have three children:

Robert Lee Hargrove IV
Henry Jesper Hargrove
Elizabeth Anne Hargrove

Both of Robert's parents were from Madera, California. His paternal Grandfather, Robert Lee Hargrove Sr, was a prominent attorney. While his maternal Grandfather, William Christopher Reid, was a physician. His father received his Bachelors' degree from the University of California and his mother received her degree in applied psychology (later in life she was the chief administrator at Agnew's State Hospital).

After his parents divorced he was raised by both his maternal and paternal grandparents. His intermediate and high school years were spent in Oakland, California where his grandfather Reid still practiced medicine during the Great Depression. Robert earned money by selling the Saturday Evening Post on street corners. After graduation from Oakland High he worked as an electrician in the Oakland shipyards. When the war broke out he enlisted in the Navy where he earned more money. His left arm rate was a "radioman" with the rank of "Petty Officer First Class."

Robert's theater of operations were in the Western South Pacific, where he served on PT Boats as a radioman. While being moved from the Solomon Islands his transport was sunk. He never went into more detail about his service. With the victory in the Pacific he was mustered out of the Navy at Swan Island Naval Yard in Portland, Oregon.

Soon after departing the Navy he returned home to Oakland, California and dated Cara Hazel Masvik. She was divorced with a young son Henry Jesper Harper. Soon after their marriage on April 27, 1946 Robert adopted ‘Hank'. They spent their early marriage months living with the Masvik household in Oakland. By this time Robert was working for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company (PT&T), as a lineman. With the GI Bill they soon purchased a home not yet built at 106 Hubbard Avenue, Pleasant Hill, California. Just as the house was completed they added another son to the family with the birth of Robert Lee Hargrove IV. Another child was wanted but Cara was unable to have additional children so they adopted a little girl and named her Elizabeth Ann Hargrove, born July 03, 1955. During this time Robert managed the extensive land holdings in California for his father. Houses located in Carmel by the Sea and in Madera, California.

During the summer of 1955 Robert, with a double-sign board placed roof rack on their 1952 Plymouth station wagon, launched Carabob Rents. Robert's life and that of his family were forever changed. All three children worked in the family business. After 5 years the business was making enough to support the family and Robert no longer needed to work graveyard shifts with the phone company. In 1972 the name of the business changed to Taylor Rental Center with two locations. One in Lafayette, California, the other in Walnut Creek, California. The Lafayette location soon closed and the Walnut Creek Location housed both the equipment rental and Party Equipment Rental divisions. Robert retired from the rental business in the 1980's and moved to Carmel by the Sea. With later moves to Moro Bay, California and then onto Lake Chipolata, Mexico. He and Cara returned to the States when Cara developed fast growing bone cancer. They resided in the pocket area of Sacramento, California until on 3 Aug 1994 the love of his life passed away.

Robert continued to live in the Sacramento, California area, close to his daughter Beth and her husband Paul Creasy until he himself went to join his beloved.
