Max was the husband of Brenda K.G. Sloan and the son of Mr. & Mrs. C.R. Sloan of Moultrie GA and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on March 16 1966 in Atlanta GA. In Vietnam he was serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On a blocking assignment during a Company sweep east of Hill 55 near the La Tho River in the Dien Ban District of Quang Nam Province a Marine tripped a wire causing an explosion. An M-26 grenade had been was rigged as a mine, the hostile explosive device wounded two men and killed LCpl Sloan as a result of fragmentation wounds to his body.
