Daniel Kennedy McRae Swan was born 4 March 1859 in St Andrews, Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was Douglas Swan, a shoemaker, and his mother was Alexandrina McRae. Daniel Swan had many different occupations, including tailor's assistant, ship steward's assistant, rubber worker in a Tire Plant, farmer and dry goods salesman. He married Mary Augusta Halliday 26 January 1877 in Edinburgh. They had eight children: Douglas, born 1878; Alexander born 1880; Mary Augusta, 1881-1965; Daniel, born 1884; Frances L E, born 1886; George,1890-1984; William M born 1891; and Jane, born 1896.

About 1902, Daniel and his wife separated. He emigrated to Saskatchewan where he was a farm worker,and from there to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he was a salesman. He owned a house at 832 Simond Ave valued at $1400 in 1940. On the 1940 census, he declared the highest level of education completed was grade six elementary.

His wife emigrated to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1903, with children Frances, Jane, George, William, Alex, Alex's wife Barbara and their infant. Mary Halliday Swan died in Saskatoon on 10 Jul 1934.
