Songwriter. Born in New York City, he was a dance instructor at Arthur Murray's before beginning a long and successful career as a songwriter for films and recordings. He was nominated for 16 Best Song Academy Awards, winning three Oscars for "Secret Love" from film "Calamity Jane" (1953), the title song from "Love is a Many Slandored Thing" (1955) and "The Shadow of Your Smile" from "The Sandpiper" (1965). Outside of films, he wrote many popular recordings to include "Black Coffee" (1950), "Tender Is the Night" (1962), "A Time For Love" (1966) and "Days of Love" (1967). In 1972, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He died in Beverly Hills, California.
