From the North Creek Enterprise, Dec. 28, 1938

George H. Ives, who conducted lumbering operations in the neighborhood of North Creek for several years, died Christmas Eve at his home in North Creek, New York. He was eighty-three years old. Burial was in North Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Ives was born in Canaan, Connecticut, June 29, 1855. The family moved to Illinois and later to Scranton, Pennsylvania. After some experience as bookkeeper for a firm in Peoria, Kansas, which sold agricultural implements, Mr. Ives became a partner in the music business with his brother-in-law, the late James W. Guernsey of Scranton. While in Scranton, he joined the Pennsylvania National Guard and won medals five years in succession as a member of the crack rifle team

From 1887 to 1912, Mr. Ives built up one of the largest retail music businesses in eastern Pennsylvania at his store in Wilkes-Barre...In 1912 Mr. Ives closed his piano business and formed, with his brother Edwin Ives of Scranton, the Ives Lumber Company with timber holdings and mills at Deposit, Apex, and North Creek, New York. Later the firm was dissolved and in 1917 Mr. George Ives moved with his family to North Creek and managed his extensive lumber operations there. The lumber roads down the sides of the mountains - Gore, Pete Gay, Little Peaked - are now the busy trails of the Gore Mountain Ski Club. Ives' Dam once the headwaters of his long log chute down to North Creek and the Hudson River, is now a landmark well know to skiers.

In 1888, Mr. Ives married Miss Alice Smith of Philadelphia, a graduate of Millersville Normal School of this state. Mrs. Ives died in February of this year. Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Louis J. Little, Miss Alice M. Ives, and Miss Helen D. Ives of North Creek, and Mrs. Clarence M. Wright of Hartford, New York; a granddaughter, Miss Alice R. Chapin of Hartford, N.Y.; and two brothers; Edwin W. Ives of Brookside, New Jersey, and Albert G. Ives of Scranton, Pa.
