James Pete Dobbins
SPUR - James Pete Dobbins of Spur, Texas passed away at the Kent County Nursing Home following a brief illness on Nov. 23, 2013. As he said near the end of his life, I've had 86 good years. A visitation will be held at the Zapata Funeral Home of Spur, Texas from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 with a funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013 at the First Methodist Church in Spur, with Eric Swenson presiding. Burial will follow at the Spur Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Zapata Funeral Home of Spur, Texas.
Pete was born in Spur, Texas, the son of Corrie and James Homer Dobbins. He graduated from pharmacy school at the University of Texas. Pete bought into a pharmacy in Houston, Texas, before being drafted into the Army in 1951. In the Army, he served 18 months as a member of the Medical Corp, M.A.S.H. unit in the Korean War. He was proud of his service. He was honorably discharged in 1954 as a 1st Lieutenant, receiving a commendation for Meritorious Service.
After the war, he married and bought Dobbins Pharmacy, in Stamford, Texas. He sold it in 1975, retired, and moved back to his hometown of Spur, where he enjoyed work as a substitute pharmacist in Hamlin, Post, Spur, and neighboring towns. He inherited land, bought additional land, and became a rancher. He loved people and was a loyal friend. Nothing could get in the way of a good golf game with his golfing buddies or listening to music from the Big Band era. He loved technology, and in his 80s got an iPad, an iPod, and a Kindle, and used them every day. He embraced learning, working crossword puzzles and any how-to TV program, and he was always trying new ways to conserve water and improve his land. He loved his alma mater and was always wearing his Longhorn cap.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ouida Harkey of Abilene.
Pete is survived by his twin brother, Pike Dobbins of Austin; his daughter, Debra Dobbins Burleson and her husband John of Waco, Texas; and his grandchildren, Jim, Scott, and Meg Burleson, who were a great source of pride to him, as were his nieces and nephews and extended family.
His family would like to thank Dr. Steve Alley, Dr. Mike Rice, Kathy Lisenbee, administrator and the staff at Kent County Nursing Home, Odyssey Hospice, and the many nurses and aides who provided an incredibly loving home for Dad, Grandy, in his final days. Also, the Spur friends who encouraged him and supported his daughter will always be remembered. The nursing staff always gave us an update about Dad by saying, He had lots of visitors today. His friends lived out the true meaning of being a friend, as he had been to them. There is truly no place as welcoming as a small town.
Music was very important to Pete throughout his life. He was a member of the Spur Band and the Longhorn Band and appreciated the opportunity to go to college.
