Adopted son of James Darias Van Dusen(1852-1928)and Alice [Davis] Van Dusen (1856-1935) his early years were spent in Grand Forks North Dakota.

Article entitled "When Merrillville Was McGuinn's Village" by Harold Van Dusen. "Harold Van Dusen is a former telegraph editor of the Gary Post Tribune, serving in that capacity during World War II. He was editor of the national Purple Heart publication at that time, having been wounded while serving in France in World War I. He is now on the news staff of the Corning Leader, Corning, N.Y."
