Funeral services for Jay Bruce Hoover, age 75, of Frederick will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at the First Christian Church in Frederick with Rev. Mark Sewell officiating. Burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery, under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Mr. Hoover passed away from this life to his next on November 24, 2013 in Lawton, just a few weeks after his wife and youngest daughter were laid to rest.

Bruce was born to Merrill and Helen (Swartz) Hoover on November 2, 1938 in Frederick, Oklahoma and was raised in the Laing community east of Tipton. He attended Laing School, where he participated in basketball, baseball, and FFA. He graduated in 1957. He attended Cameron University and OSU, graduating from OSU with a BA. He later received his Masters in Administration from Northern Arizona University. Bruce married Barbara Gayle Hoover—the love of his life—in 1961, and they were married 52 years. Gayle preceded him in death on October 15, 2013.

Bruce was a passionate educator for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He worked at Chilocco, Oklahoma, Washington, D.C. and then Fort Wingate, New Mexico, where he worked for 28 years. He loved working with the Navajo people and was Chief School Administrator of the Wingate High School for 26 years. He also coached football, basketball, and track during that time. He was a proud supporter of Wingate High School athletics. In 1991, Bruce received the national honor of being selected "Principal of the Year" by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Upon retirement in 1996, Bruce and Gayle moved back to Frederick, where they were active in the community. They helped with Meals on Wheels as well as the Tillman County Food Bank. Bruce was involved in Rotary Club and in the First Christian Church, where he served as Elder in addition to teaching Sunday school and was the current chairman of the board. Bruce was named Frederick's "Most Useful Citizen" in 2010.

Bruce loved sports and was a big fan of OSU, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Wingate Bears. He was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed attending their sporting activities as well as following their other hobbies and interests. He also enjoyed traveling with Gayle.

Mr. Hoover is survived by two daughters: Holly Fite and husband Steven of Willow, Oklahoma and Kandy Hoover of Lawton, Oklahoma; six grandchildren: Daniel Long, Crystal Guest and husband Buck, Isaiah Smith, Jason Long, Cecily Smith, and Dustin Hoover; two step grandchildren: Randi Fite, Jacki Pace and husband Cliff; four great-grandchildren and two on the way; and two siblings: sister Marilyn Miller and her spouse Gene of Irvine, California and brother Charles Hoover and wife Debbie of Durango, Colorado. Bruce had a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife Gayle and daughter Robin Hoover.
