W.S., as he was known by all, was born in Hull, Texas to Minnie (Camfield) and Willard Samuel Williams, Sr. On Aug. 3, 1946, he married Margaret "Shorty" Brown. A daughter, Jean Marie Williams Roberts, was born to their union and preceded W. S. in death.
He was serving in the National Guard at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which was on his 21st birthday. He became part of the 36th Div., Co. L, 142 Infantry and was stationed in Egypt for training to invade Italy. He fought in the battle of Monte Cassino (to take a monastary on the top of a mountain in Italy which was occupied by Italian forces)when he was first captured. W. S. spent his time as a POW in a camp in Poland planning his escape. For his first attempt, he dug a hole under his bed, but this was not effective as he was soon recaptured. On the second escape, another POW who spoke Polish went with him. The local farmers allowed them to sleep in their barns during the day, and they traveled at night. Eventually they met up with the Allied forces.
After the war, W. S. operated a barbeque restaurant in Guymon for a time, and he owned many rental properties. He was a very friendly and amazing person.
He is survived by his wife, a grand-daughter, and a great grand-daughter.
