Youngest of three daughters born to author Frederick Whittaker and his wife, Elizabeth May; Hildegarde was also half-sister to Joseph Hopkins Houston (1860-1936), only child of her mother's first marriage to Joseph Hopkins.

Hildegarde married Rowland Southworth 'Roy' Hubbell of Brooklyn, and with him had two children; a daughter, Elizabeth King (m. Geoffrey Lampard); and Richard W. (m. Kyra 'Alanova' Bolm, daughter of Russian ballet star and dance master, Adolf Bolm).

After her first husband passed away, she married widower Edmund C. Gause.

Having suffered from chronic pulmonary trouble for some time, she and her husband were wintering in Phoenix when she passed away from a coronary occlusion.

Mrs. Hildegarde May Gause, wife of Edmund Canby Gause, former Mayor of Pelham Manor, N.Y., died early yesterday at Phoenix, Ariz., after a long illness. She would have been 69 years old on Friday.

Before her health failed, more than four years ago, Mrs. Gause had been active in philanthropic and civic organizations in Westchester County. She was a former director of the Manor Club, and active in the Woman's Guild of Christ Protestant Episcopal Church, both of Pelham Manor.

Born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Capt. and Mrs. Frederick Whittaker. Her marriage to Mr. Gause took place on May 10, 1939.

Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Mrs. Geoffery Lampard of St. Catharines, Ont., and a son, Richard W. Hubbell of Pelham Manor. Her first husband, the late Roy S. Hubbell, died in 1932.
