John Carroll Atteberry was born September 5, 1933 in Weatherford, Oklahoma to Anna Marie and Paul Ardean Atteberry. He passed away September 6, 2007 at Cheyenne, Oklahoma at the age of 74 years and 1 day after a long tough fight against cancer.
John met the love of his life Till Stelting when they were the young age of 15 and 13. John and Till were later married at the Blessed Virgin Catholic Church in Hydro, Oklahoma on December 1, 1953. They have celebrated 53 years of marriage.
John was raised in the Weatherford-Hydro area. He attended Catholic school in his early years, served his country for a short time in the National Guard then later was a truck driver. In 1962 he, Till and their children moved to Cheyenne where he would work for the S & S Ranch until 1989 when illness forced him to retire. John and Till then moved to the Dempsey area where they now reside. The Cheyenne area has been home for them for more than 40 years.
John loved many things about life. Ranching, horse, cattle, fishing, hunting, country music, western movies, a good game of pitch, his 1968 Ford Mustang, his John Wayne memorabilia, helping others in need, but mostly he cherished his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters, brother and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law, Geneva Atterberry, 2 sisters, Paula Caputo and Alice Peterson.
He is survived by his wife, Till, of the home; children, daughter and son-in-law, Anna Marshall and Bryan Bonser, son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Atterberry and Carrie Lovett, daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Mike Crum, daughter and son-in-law, Susan & Lonnie Mayfield; 3 sisters, Betty Atterberry, Mary Steelting & husband George and Kelly Cartwright and husband Tom; 1 brother, Ardean Atterberry and wife Juanita; 9 grandchildren, Karen, Larry, John, Wesley, Richard, Matthew, Alica, Lex, Rowdy and Dylan; 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held Monday, September 10, 2007 at Queen Of
All Saints Catholic Church in Sayre, Oklahoma. Intermrent was in the Weatherford Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Home.
