George W. Nowels and Elizabeth (Purdy) Nowels
George Washington Nowels was born November 17, 1834, at Berlin (Holmes County) Ohio. His mother, Elizabeth (Bird) Nowels, died April 17, 1835, when he was five months of age. His father was David Nowels who died April 19, 1859 in Holmes County, Ohio. His obituary states that he was adopted by Abner Purdy and was raised on the farm by the Big Spring between Killbuck and Millersburg. He apparently received very little schooling before he was 21 but later continued his education at the Academy in Spring Mountain (Coshocton County) Ohio.
On April 29, 1860 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Purdy. Seven children, Sarah Florence, Ida Ginevra, Cora Leticia, Marvin Ozias, George Paxton, Sylvenus, and Truman were born to the couple.
Mr. Nowels taught school about 15 years. In 1866 he united with the Wolfcreek M.P. Church (Holmes County), and was a member of that church until his death. He acted as superintendent of the Sabbath School of that church for 30 years, giving up the work in that position only when he became unable to hear what was going on in the room.
The one Nowels home of which we have knowledge was on a farm in Richland Township, Holmes County. Records show that this farm of 80 acres was purchased by George W. Nowels in 1865 from George Steiner and Margaret Steiner for the sum of $1000. Mr. Nowels died October 17, 1910 at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 10 days, and his obituary states that he died at his home on Wolfcreek. If they moved to the farm shortly after purchase it can be assumed that all of the seven children were raised on the farm and that all of the children except Sarah Florence and Ida Ginevra were born on this farm.

(Mrs. W.E.Engle) of Hicksville, Ohio at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 1 day. She was the last of a family of two sons and six daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Purdy.

An interesting note on the longevity of the George W. Nowels family is that George W. Nowels lived to the age of almost 76, his wife Elizabeth to the age of 90 and their children Sarah to age 87, Ida to age 79, Cora to age 78, Marivn to age 86, George to age 88, Sylvenus to age 77 and Truman to age 81.
