TEXAS CITY - Mary Olive Matthews, 87, longtime resident of Texas City, passed away at her home on Saturday, July 21, 2002. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church
in Texas City. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2002, at Emken-Linton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Matthews was born on June 26, 1914, in Wooster, Texas, now known as Deer Park, Texas. She has lived in Texas City since the early 1940's where she and her husband, James A. Matthews, raised their family. She worked for several of the Oil Companies in Texas City and retired from Texas City Refinery in 1978. She was a worker in the HOST program for the Texas City School District.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend to many people in Texas City and many other places. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church for over fifty years. She gave tirelessly of her time, energy, and money to any and all who needed her.

Mrs. Matthews is preceded in death by her parents, Joe Frank and Hattie Anthony; all five of her sisters and brothers, Russell, George, and Jeffie, Ruth, and Sarah; and her husband of 68 years, James Matthews.

She is survived by her son, James A. Matthews Jr. and his wife Jacque, of Tiki Island; three daughters, Patricia Halfmann of April Sound, Texas, Barbara Garcia and her
husband, Bobby, of Deer Park, Texas, and Sandra Hamilton and her husband, Hinton, of Arlington, Texas. Other survivors include 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to say thank you to the many people who have been so kind and loving during Mary's illness over
the past few years, and especially the last weeks.

A very special thanks goes to A-MED Hospice, Pat Ballard, Cathy Armstrong, Alice Woolridge, Betty Wilson, Sharon Shaunesey, Mary Ann Gateley, Joyce and Richard Smith, William (Bubba) Bean, Raymond Howell, and Beverly and
Terri and the Union Planters Bank crew.

Pallbearers will be Chief Salazar, Joe Evans, Billy Jack Peques, James Mayne, King Gremillion, David Dunn, Bubba Bean, Raymond Howell, Bert Matthews, and Bobby
Matthews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Methodist Home in Waco, Texas, or A-MED Hospice.
