Richard Horace Conner, 87, of Birkdale Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a brief illness.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, West Third Avenue by the Revs. Dr. Ray Howell and Tommy Wilson. Burial with military rites will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Mr. Conner was born March 4, 1926, in Lenoir County to John and Mollie Bunn Conner. He retired from Lance after more than 30 years of service. He also sold Christmas trees for many years. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was an active member of the Fellowship Sunday School class. Mr. Conner was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Pacific campaign during World War II. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 696, the VFW and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Janet Greer Conner; brothers John Conner, James Conner, Rom Conner, Bobby Conner and J.D. Conner; and sisters Bessie Lewis, Minnie Grant, Doris Scott, Ruth Bates and Helen Bray.

Surviving are his wife of the home, Miriam Stroud Conner, whom he married Nov. 17, 1947; sons R. Horace Conner Jr. and wife Kathy and Neal Conner, all of Lexington; daughters Nona Fitzpatrick of Lexington and Suzy Conner of Winston-Salem; brother Joseph P. Conner of Timberlake; grandchildren Richard Horace "Rick" Conner III and wife Taylor of Harrisburg, Benjamin Jay Conner and wife Whitney of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Neal Patrick Conner of Charlotte; and great-grandchildren Callen Wilson Conner and Greer Elizabeth Conner.
